We’ve all heard by now that Taika Waititi was hired as Thor Ragnarok’s director in order to bring more humour into the movie. And anyone who’s seen his comedic work, will know that this is no idle threat.
While many of us remain insistent that the Thor movies should concentrate less on humour and more on compelling character development, we can take some solace in Taika’s success with Hunt For the Wilderpeople, , and hope Marvel has hired him as much for his passion for character depth as his penchant for snappy jokes.
Still, anyone with What We Do In the Shadows and that SDCC Thor mockumentary fresh in their mind might want to grit their teeth against rumours that Thor’s flatmate Darryl will have a Ragnarok cameo, and hope – pray even – that Taika never gets his mits on the following Thor comic panels.
After all, there’s still a few weeks left of filming, and that’s plenty of time for the Thor Ragnarok director to come up with a reason to turn Loki into a unicorn…
The Top Six Loki-centric Comic Panels We Don’t Want Taika Waititi To See (or do we…?)
#6: That time Loki’s powers could be extinguished with water.
According to ancient lore (aka Journey Into Mystery #85 ) Loki becomes a helpless mess when soaking wet. Is this something we wanna see played out on the big screen? Umm… I would hazard a guess and say no?
Well. Except. Perhaps… the Thorki fans…
#5: That time Loki turned everyone into negatives
Over the past few days, the internet has become awash with photos of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston filming a few New York scenes on the streets of Brisbane. One scene appears to show Thor posing for selfies with a fangirl while Loki looks on…
Aw gummon! Do we really think the God of Mischief would be happy to stand by and play second fiddle while his brother takes up all the attention for once? Hell no! In fact, at this point it would be perfectly plausible for Loki to snap and turn everyone into negatives while screaming “Thor, you’ve stolen my limelight! Nyaaarghh argle argle argle!”
Don’t think it could be done? Well, Journey Into Mystery #85 says otherwise!
Is this a scene we want to see played out on the big screen? Yeah… Nah. And while it’s probably too late to say this… Let’s just hide #85 from Taika Waititi entirely.
No. 4: That time Loki stole ideas from Willy Wonka.
Gosh, those early Thor comics sure do offer up a lot of fun suggestions for injecting more humour into the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Joss Whedon may have missed out on a golden opportunity to borrow from JIM #88 and have Loki strive for world domination by turning the streets into candy and icecream, but perhaps it’s not too late to see Loki get up to a bit of sugar-coated mischief in Ragnarok!
I mean, wouldn’t we want to at least see this as a quirky ‘extended scene’ in the Bluray release?
Actually yes. Yes, we would. Please, Taika, please make this a thing.
No. 3: That time Loki turned into a unicorn.
This one comes from a much more recent reinvention of Loki. Loki: Agent of Asgard #8 in fact.
While this version of Loki was modelled on Tom Hiddleston, I’m not sure we’ll see the real MCU deal shape-shift into a unicorn anytime soon.
Then again, if those NYC cabs with their pesky right-hand drives1)referencing the replica cabs on Thor Ragnarok’s Brisbane set, which are all right-hand drives fail to get Thor and Loki to Dr Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum quick enough, then… Maybe?
No. 2: That time Thor lopped off Loki’s head.
You knew this was coming, right…?
Pretty sure 75% of the Thor fandom have been expecting/fearing this for some time now. Pretty sure if it happens, the fans will revolt. Pretty sure if it doesn’t happen, the fans will revolt.
Good luck with that one, Taika.
#1. That time Loki wore THIS.
Loki in green stockings and a garter belt. It’s comic-canon. It really is. And it’s even more glorious than that underwear-on-the-outside outfit that Loki used to wear!
Perhaps you were expecting the #1 slot to be That Moment Jane Foster Became Thor or That Moment Loki Turned Into A Woman, but no. No no… This is arguably the number one comic panel that we do or don’t want Taika Waitit to see depending on what side of the fence you’re sitting on or whether or not you even have a divider that identifies as a fence, wall, hedge, or something else entirely.
Jane Foster swooning over Loki.
This too, is a canon-compliant scene which many Loki fans would love to see play out on the big screen. And Hell, you don’t even have to hire Natalie Portman – just get a stand in and stick a big Tumblr logo over her face! See?
So there you have it. And while the subject of this article was supposed to be Marvel comic panels we don’t want to see in Thor Ragnarok, I think it’s pretty clear by now that we do want to see Taika Waititi turn most if not all of these cheeseball moments into some glorious work of Cinematic art.
But… Perhaps not in the movie itself. Bluray extras? Certainly.
